Ljubljana Dragon Carnival

Post by Krista

One of the really fun parts of living somewhere very different from California is taking part in different seasonal traditions and activities. February 10 was Shrove Saturday and that meant it was Ljubljana Dragon Carnival time. Held annually, as part of Shrovetide events, it’s a really fun way for the community to dress up, in both traditional folk and not so traditional folk ways, and blow off some steam as we all await Spring. Last year, we went to Ptuj for Shrove Sunday and saw the Kurents, this year some of the Kurents and more came to us!

It’s kind of cool the dragon carnival aligned with Lunar New Year celebrations for the Year of the Dragon, something Ljubljana can really get on board with! Enjoy some of my favorite pics – less words and more images this time 🙂

Rounding the corner to cross the bridge, here comes the dragon….

Oh snap, photo bombed! With Shellie Jeffries and Tony Kroes

Crack that whip!!!! Still wonder how many eyeballs have been lost in carnivals past….

So awesome how kids and adults from various neighborhoods in Ljubljana dress up in a certain theme. So impressed with the sophistication of the costumes. Here’s one of my favs

And don’t forget the Kurents, all the way from Ptuj!

And sometimes, you just want to have fun and be a bit random!
