Vesele praznike! (Happy holidays!)

We have been pretty lazy as of late about sending holiday cards, but we do have a lot of holiday images to share, so here’s another blog post! It’s been almost a year since our move to Slovenia, and our first holiday season here. We’ve heard this country goes crazy for Christmas, and as suckers of all the lights and spectacle of this season, we can assure you that it has not disappointed us. (If you want to learn all about how Slovenia has three Santa Claus’, give this episode of 99% Invisible a listen.)

We’ll be leaving for the West Coast in a few days where we’ll spend a month visiting and celebrating with family and friends in Oregon and California. We’re even renting an apartment in our old neighborhood in Oakland. While all the holiday bling that Slovenia has to offer has been a blast, we’re really looking forward to seeing folks after almost a year. In the meantime, here are a bunch of photos that show off that winter spirit. Happy holidays, everyone!

The city of Kamnik with a fresh dusting of snow.

The arboretum near Kamnik has a holiday light show. The next few photos are from there.

The arrival of Sveti Miklavž (aka Saint Nicholas) and his entourage of small demon children into Ljubljana Old Town.

Bling city! Ljubljana has over 50 km of lights, 850 to 900 light fixtures, and over 90 trees. Most of the trees will be replanted after the holidays.

Compostable nativity scene – someone is missing!

One of many childrens’ choirs belting out the carols in front of City Hall.

Organ grinders

Lanterns made by local schoolkids.

  1. Wow, that’s wonderful! And they replant the trees?? I had no idea there were still organ grinders; are they only around at Christmas? I want to see one!
