Chester’s Tale: The Journey from Oakland to Ljubljana

After living at 230 Orange Street Apt 7 in Oakland my entire 14 years, my human parents decided to put all our stuff in boxes (or give it away, ahem my favorite cat tower) and make me go on a very long adventure.

We started out at an AirBnB apartment in our Adams Point neighborhood which was really cool and had lots of closets to hide in and sunny spots to sleep in.

I was just getting used to it all when Matt, Barb, and Jackson (I really like Jackson, he gives me treats!) showed up and we all piled into the car with our huge wheelie bags. I had gotten some cat drugs the night before and that morning so I was feeling pretty chill (I actually enjoy car rides but please don’t tell anyone.)

When the car ride stopped everyone hugged and we went into this huge building – everyone had giant wheelie bags and looked panicked. Once we dropped off our big bags, we went to a place where a nice lady made sure our hands and fur did not test positive for explosives and my cat carrier would not blow up. I have to admit, I was NOT okay leaving my carrier, but everyone thought I was handsome so I guess it was okay.

Then the long wait at the gate began, luckily I have a comfy travel carrier with expanding sides so I could stretch out. I was not sure why I was getting kibble so readily, I think it was guilt kibble, whatever, I was loving it. Finally, we boarded and I was put under the seat, not my favorite part at all. I have never heard so many sounds and felt so many vibrations. Good thing I was on kitty drugs.

The flight was really long and eventually I was able to open the expanding sides and lounge in more comfort. I was totally hungry and had to pee but when I was taken to the bathroom, I wanted nothing to do with food or the travel cat box thingy. I don’t want to be mean but what was she thinking when she bought those things from the travel pet store? Like, right, I am going to walk into an accordion folded paper bag and take a pee? Hell no!

Landing in Munich and boarding the last plane to Ljubljana was a blur – waiting for luggage (or not), nice people putting me in a room and testing my fur for explosives (What’s up with that? Do cats explode regularly?), and yet another under the plane seat. This time it was squishier and the drugs were wearing off.

I kept hearing, “You are doing a great job buddy. You are a champ! We are almost there.” I was starting to get a little worried I would never eat and pee again when we landed. Luckily, we had all the correct paperwork, USDA embossed, signed EU health certificate, what a hoot that was to get but that’s a story for another time.

I was confused why it took like six men to look at my paperwork and then when the guy walked away with Krista’s passport and my health certificate, I was like, oh no, I am going to a Slovenian cat jail But no, the man came back and gave us the green light to go.

Luckily, Chris came to pick us up at the airport. I was so happy to see he had my new ModKat XL cat box and lots of litter in the trunk. Now to get to our interim AirBnB on Kolodvorska ulica in Ljubljana for the long awaited pee!

I won’t go into details here but you can imagine how good it felt to use my new cat box (like 3 times) and get some grub in my tummy. You know, this traveling thing is not so bad. I rather like this new place, lots of sun and lots of guilt kibble. I hear we are moving again to our apartment on Periceva ulica at the end of the month. Bring on the next adventure!
